A survey of 1049 IT professionals has revealed that IT companies are focusing to spend more on certain areas where the return on investment is high especially after last year’s rebounded data center budgets because of major cuts. In the year 2009, 40 percent of the data centers in US that were surveyed had faced cuts in their budgets, 20 percent centers had faced a cut of more than 10 percent in their budget. This year the situation appears much better as only 20 percent are expecting a budget cut. As a matter of fact, around 46 percent of the respondents said that they are expecting that their data center budget may rise this year.
The Windows Server Operating System and implementations of virtualization are driving IT spending this year. About 50 percent increase is expected in Windows Server OS whereas 59 percent in virtualization implementations. The green IT concept has lagged behind on the way but still spending on data center infrastructure is expected to rise. Another revelation of the survey was that the adoption of public cloud computing solutions is very slow because of the issues regarding security and compliance. The survey also reported the numbers related to spending on systems management. It was found that systems management spending increased three times more as compared to the last year. Last year in 2009, only 9 percent of the respondents were actually interested in spending on systems management. In 2010, that number has jumper to 27 percent.
The respondents of the survey were also asked about which operating systems were deployed in their data centers. The results show that 50 percent of these respondents have increased the spending on Windows Server OS this year whereas only 16 percent have actually decreased the spending. The next highest growth was registered by Linux with 36 percent respondents increasing the spending and only 8 % decreasing it. The spending data for rest of the operating systems stayed almost flat.
