Data warehousing solutions provider, Teradata, has taken over Kickfire, a start up analytic appliance seller renowned for its usage of the open-source MySQL database and a SQL processing chip to enhance query performance. Rumors of Kickfire's existence being extinct as a self-governing company had been circulating for weeks. Teradata's move became visible during the vendor's earnings conference call last week.

The deal provides Teradata with "another set of intellectual property that allows us to start looking at things like advanced pipelining," said Darryl McDonald, executive vice president of business development and marketing, during the call. "It's been leveraged all the way from supercomputers all the way down to gaming devices.

The California State University system lately utilized Oracle's Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition on three of its twenty-three campuses as part of a cross-institutional project called the "Common Financial System Reporting and Data Warehouse."

Cal State's initiative is designed to supply reporting and analytic capacities through centrally maintained, enterprise-wide money reporting environment and data warehouse. Another goal is also to permit individual campuses to maintain reporting flexibility for their own purposes.
