Data center pros viewed Oracle's current call to support Solaris running on Hewlett-Packard and Dell hardware with great interest. They hope the news -- made public in a release that further said HP and Dell can resell Solaris OracleVM and Oracle Company Linux -- signals new pragmaticism and suppleness on the part of a company they feared was becoming ever more exclusive.
The support move an about face from an earlier posting exclaiming that Oracle wouldn't support Solaris on non-Sun hardware. That change-of-management memorandum from May released support offerings from Oracle -- none of which were to be available on non-Oracle / Sun hardware. The perception that Oracle isn't precisely friendly to 3rd party sellers or the opensource community led straight to plenty of amazement, including the apparent rebellion of the OpenSolaris community over how Oracle is handling the OpenSolaris effort.
