IBM is all set to launch the 256 core Power 795 machine which is the largest Power-7 based server from the IT giants. This Power 795 server has 1024 threads and 256 cores with main memory of 8 terabyte to support the cores. The server is expected to have two modes like IBM’s multi-chassis Power 780 server.
In the MaxCore mode, the Power 780 server could run at 3.8 GHz by scaling it up to 64 cores. In case the clients wanted more cache, clock speeds and memory per core on the Power 780 server, the system settings could be changed. Once the settings were changed, then after rebooting the server, it would start in the TurboCore mode turning only 50 percent cores on running at 4.14 GHz each.
The TurboCore mode is also expected to be present in the power 795 server. This suggests that 128 cores will be running in the TurboCore mode and the cache, clock speeds and main memory allocated for every core will increase by 100 percent. The basic architecture of this server is expected to be on the similar lines of the earlier Power 595 server based on Power 6. The Power 595 server had modular system boards having memory slots and eight processor books in a single server system.
Apart form this server; IBM can also create another server on the similar lines of Power 795 with 6 core Power 7 chips without the TurboCore mode. IBM had also announced the Power 770 server having multiple chassis and a combination of 8-core or 6-core Power 7 chips that run at 3.1 GHz and 3.5 GHz but without the TurboCore mode.
