Future seems to be bright for enterprise linux server platforms

Companies like Novell and Red Hat who are vendors of enterprise linux server operating systems could be headed towards a growth in sales in the coming 12 months. As much as 40 percent businesses are thinking about switching workloads that are critical for the business to open source software. Accenture, the mega-consulting firm, asked around 300 public and private sector companies having revenues exceeding $500 million about their future plans for deploying open source software. The results were announced recently upon which, Accenture's chief technology architect, Paul Daugherty said that, "What we are seeing is a coming of age of open source."

HP and Red Hat offer migration services to Solaris users

Hewlett-Packard, a leading manufacturer of servers, and Red Hat, a leader in Linux platforms, seem to have come together in helping organizations to switch from Oracle’s Solaris platforms to other Linux based ones. While there was no formal announcement that was made, the migration services that are being offered by HP suggest that is a reaction to the end of HP’s agreement about Solaris OEM. As per this agreement, HP was entitled to run its ProLiant blade and rack servers on Solaris and sell support contracts for the Solaris server platform which it also does for Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Microsoft’s Windows Server and Red Hat’s Enterprise Linux platforms.
