AMD launches $99 quad-core Opteron chip for cloud based servers

Sophisticated Micro Devices on Wed. revealed a new family of microprocessors for cloud computing servers, including one chip priced around $99.

The chips belong to the Opteron 4100 family, come in six-core and four-core variations. Formerly code-named Lisbon, they draw less power than their forefathers while achieving the same levels of performance, expounded Brent Kerby, senior product executive at AMD.

VMware Enhances its VMware Go, an Online VM Builder

The VMware log on and freebie virtual machine builder that VMware made to spur adoption of its ESXi inserted and free server hypervisor is getting some tweaks which will make it more interesting to tiny and medium companies that may instead go with Microsoft's freebie Hyper-V.

VMware Go was declared last Aug at the VMworld trade show and is the results of a partnership between VMware and Shavlik Technologies, a VMware partner that sells online patch and configuration management tools who is really hosting the Go tool.

Next Solaris listed for 2011

The words "OpenSolaris" didn't pass his lips once during Oracle's systems technique update, executive vice chairman John Fowler in control of server and storage did talk a bit about the way forward for Oracle's Solaris Unix alternative.

It has been more than 5 years since Solaris ten was launched, and Fowler related that next year's Solaris eleven will incorporate "a major set of upgrades" for main parts of the operating software, and would represent the sort of jump in technology that Sun Microsystems did with its O. S when it moved from Solaris nine to Solaris ten in Jan 2005.
